Use it room by room, and you'll never buy the wrong size again. Four universal rules before you measure anything · Measure your room first. Length and width. Write it down in both feet and centimeters. · Measure your furniture footprint. Sofa width, dining table dimensions with chairs pulled out, bed size. · Leave 12 to 24 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. This is what makes a room feel finished. · When in doubt, go bigger. The single most common mistake in rug sizing is buying too small. Living room · the three layouts that work Every successful living room rug arrangement falls into one of three layouts. Pick the one that fits your room and your budget, then size accordingly. Layout 1 · All legs on the rug (most luxurious) Every leg of every piece of furniture — sofa, armchairs, coffee table — sits fully on the rug. This creates a defined "room within a room" and is the most generous, most editorial look. Best for medium and large living rooms. · Standard living room: 8 × 10 ft minimum. · Open-plan or large room: 9 × 12 ft or 10 × 14 ft. · The rule: rug should extend at least 6–8 inches past the back of the sofa.
